GLOSSARY OF TERMS - STUDENT AND EDUCATOR REPORT DATA

AP and IB assessment data are reported to the SIRS in Assessment Fact. The count is the number of students who took the exam. A student is counted each time the exam is taken. AP students reported with a score of 3 or higher are generally considered passing, while IB assessments reported with a score of 4 or higher are generally considered passing.

AP and IB course participation data are reported to the NYSED Student Information and Repository System (SIRS) in Student Class Entry Exit. Counts are based on students enrolled in these courses.

Average Class Size is the total number of students in each course/section for specified courses on BEDS Day. The data are derived from the Student Information and Repository System (SIRS) Student Class Entry Exit.

Course data displayed in the report represents select courses reported to the NYSED SIRS based on the State Approved course catalog derived from the School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED).

Eligible for Free Lunch and Eligible for Reduced-Price Lunch percentages are determined by dividing the number of approved lunch applicants by the Basic Educational Data System (BEDS) enrollment in full-day Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Instructional Modality is displayed for student attendance codes Present-In-School and Present-Out-of-School. For each Instructional Modality, the percentage is determined by dividing the number of Present days by the total number of Present days for all modalities combined (remote, in-person, both).

Principals include full- and part-time. Data sourced from SIRS Staff Snapshot, Course Instructor Assignment, and Staff Assignment.

Annual Attendance Rate is determined by dividing the school's (or district's) total actual attendance by the total possible attendance for a school year. A school's (or district's) actual attendance is the sum of the number of students in attendance on each day the school (or district's schools) was open during the school year. Possible attendance is the sum of the number of enrolled students who should have been in attendance on each day the school (or schools) was open during the school year. The state's Annual Attendance Rate is determined by dividing total actual attendance for all districts by total possible attendance for all districts.

Annually, school districts and charter schools are required to conduct a survey concerning student digital resources and Internet access in their homes. The following data points are collected.

  • Primary Learning Device Type - The type of device the student uses most often to complete learning activities away from school.
  • School Provided Device - Indication of whether the school or district issued the student a dedicated school- or district-owned device for the students use during the school year.
  • Primary Learning Device Provider - The provider of the primary learning device.
  • Primary Learning Device Access - The primary learning device is shared or not shared with another individual.
  • Primary Learning Device Sufficiency - The primary learning device is sufficient for the student to fully participate in learning activities away from school.
  • Internet Access In Residence - The student can access the Internet in their primary place of residence to participate in school requirements.
  • Internet Access Barrier - An indication of the primary barrier to having Internet access in the student's primary place of residence.
  • Internet Access Type - The primary type of Internet service used in the student's primary place of residence.
  • Internet Performance Code - Indicates whether the student can complete the full range of learning activities, including video streaming and assignment uploads, without interruptions caused by poor internet performance in their primary place of residence.

Student Suspension rate is determined by dividing the number of students who were suspended from school (not including in-school suspensions) for one full day or longer anytime during the school year by the Basic Educational Data System (BEDS) day enrollments for that school year. A student is counted only once, regardless of whether the student was suspended one or more times during the school year.

Subject Areas reported in the AP and IB section of the report are based on the subject areas for each course as contained in the School Codes for the Exchange of Data (SCED) and the Department's Comprehensive Course Catalog.

Teacher Attendance Rate is based on the number of days a teacher was reported as absent divided by the contract work days reported to NYSED subtracted from 100%. Teachers are identified as those providing instruction in the SIRS Course Instructor Assignment. Teacher attendance data are sourced from SIRS Staff Attendance.

Teacher Turnover Rate for a specified school year is the count of those teachers in the prior school year who did not return to a teaching position in the district in the current school year expressed as a percentage. Teachers must have been reported in the SIRS Course Instructor Assignment template.
